Where They were

Having gone through a period of rapid inorganic growth, our client, a European hydropower generation company was looking to capture the global market share opportunities they saw, in addition to securing the expected benefits from the merger of different smaller companies and business units into one global player, and attempting to double the business in a 5-year cycle.

The company was in need for a major reorganization, and the CEO knew that, in order to meet their goals, they needed to radically change the way they had been working and focus on collaboration across geographies, as well as cultural and functional silos.

Where They Got

Aradical change in the operating mode of a globally distributed organization takes a large, coordinated effort to bring about a new common sense that drives a new cultural style home, along with supporting the growth objectives of the business.

Our initial diagnosis highlighted the fact that the company was hemorrhaging cash at different points throughout the entire process to build new hydropower generation plants, eroding initial margins from the range of 35% down to -10%, in different projects.

We worked hand-in-hand with the lead engineering design teams at the main company locations (in Germany, Brazil, US) to create an esprit de corps and an alignment towards the new strategy.

We also brought commitment-based principles to the redesign of all operational processes, from 
Opportunity to Order (OTO) to Order to Cash (OTC), as well as to their project management practices. We ensured a rigorous execution of all aspects of the engineering design work pre- and post-bid, in a coordinated effort to secure a profitable design and a flawless execution of each project.

We also designed and implemented key management practices for the global leadership team to monitor progress on each project around the world, bringing visibility to key issues and decision-making points.
